The Baldrige National Quality Program

In 1987, the U.S. Congress established the Baldrige National Quality Program to foster Performance Excellence in U.S. businesses. The program is named for Malcolm Baldrige, who served as Secretary of Commerce from 1981 to his death in 1987.

The program establishes a set of criteria that embody the methods utilized by the best performing businesses in the country. There are 7 categories of Criteria which focus on how a company is operated:

The Criteria are the basis for organizational self assessments, for making Awards, and for giving feedback to applicants. In addition, the Criteria have three important roles in strengthening U.S. competitiveness:

bullet

To help improve organizational performance practices, capabilities, and results

bullet

To facilitate communication and sharing of best practices information among U.S. organizations of all types

bullet

To serve as a working tool for understanding and managing performance and for guiding planning and opportunities for learning

The Criteria are designed to help organizations use an aligned approach to organizational performance management that results in:

bullet

delivery of ever-improving value to customers, contributing to marketplace success

bullet

improvement of overall organizational effectiveness and capabilities

bullet

organizational and personal learning

The results have been impressive for companies embracing the Baldrige National Quality Program.
